Green Gecko's amazing kids

Dr John Sheahan and Dr Karen Kan provided lots of advice and donations in preparation for this trip and yesterday we used them to full effect. John – the hand puppet “Munchkin”was a huge hit and we were able to demonstrate correct teeth brushing with him, but the children already have it all in hand. They are only allowed sweets on Saturday, the brush 3 times a day after every meal, and the disclosing liquid only showed a minor lack of brushing in 2 children. Tania was able to predict who those children were before I told her. They loved the free toothbrushes, toothpaste and the wiggles stickers were a huge hit. Lesson 2 for me – when provided with an opportunity seize it. The 63 children at Green Gecko home for street kids were rescued from a life of begging and no prospect for education or wellness. Tania provides a safe home with healthy habits and education. They relish in the routine, classes and structure of their new lives. These children were quick to learn and enthusiastic about what we had planned. The 13 children that chose to learn to knit over a game of volley ball (yes I was amazed too) all picked it up and were happily knitting after only 10 or so minutes. Those that dropped stitches persisted and mastered it. We all were in awe of the childrens’ bright intelligence and marveled at the world Green Gecko is opening up to them. A huge contrast to the children on the streets we saw on day Ritcy our guide said that their would be probably 500 or more street kids – that is a lot of Green Gecko’s needed.
